China’s primary and secondary education is the envy of the world. Following article represents the new effort to sustain China’s leading position in the world in this particular sector.

Bai Yunfeng, president of Good Future Education Group made a speech titled “we have opened the way for change in education” at the “2017 China Internet Education Forum” hosted by the Internet Education Working Committee of China Internet Society.

His speech was mainly about how human being will learn in the future as well as individualization and equality in education.

He started with reviewing of the contemporary class-based schooling, which has been the main configuration for the Chinese public schools from kindergarten to year 12 where 180 million Chinese teenagers are educated.

The fundamental supporting factor to the existence and continuation of this class-based teaching system is that it suits the need of offering trainings to technicians and skilled labour in large scale with unified standardization. Class-based teaching system as a product of industrial revolution has its merits and a place in the modern education even though there are some critics on its effectiveness.

However, Bai pointed out that advancement of the technology such as Internet, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data is rapidly changing the way of education.

Internet technology is widely perceived as a powerful tool to advance education. Primarily it is believed that availability of lectures by outstanding teachers online will close the gap between children in cities and remote mountainous in access to quality education and result in improvement of the overall educational performance.

However, in accordance with Bai, availability of first-class teaching online has yet led to major improvement in teaching quality and reduction in inequality in education.

Bai commented that “in our online courses, completion of homework for students from primary and secondary level was low, which was only 45% even under the forceful pressure from students’ parents. Only by introducing a system ‘online class + offline assistance’ which enables offline teachers to keep a track record on students’ online learning, the rate of program completion and extension has reached about 85%.”

It is no doubt that demand for internet education is high, but it is unrealistic to think that it will automatically lead to success. Without tackling individual’s need in learning content,  homework arrangement, interest preferences and class assignment, internet education will be ineffective. This might explain why offline education is still the manifestation of education in China and the world.

In Bai’s opining, the concept of education + internet might already be over, instead   the development of artificial intelligence should offer a solution to go further. Bai revealed that Good Future now is trying to establish a system of assessment on teaching by deploying the technology such as data analysis and facial recognition. Such a system which is designed to collect, preserve and analyse feedback of students individually and collectively in response to teaching should left the game of education to another level.

This system allows teachers to have a better picture on how many students are fully understand the teaching; how many are not fully understand and how many are actually not interested. Based on such information teachers are able to develop individualized leaning program to each learner.

With the collection and deep process of such data, attention to detail can be assured. Such attention will by no means depend on physical efforts of teachers but collection and analysis of data. Development of such a system from simplicity to sophistication should substantially boost the teaching capacity of those good teachers.

At the same time, Good Future Group is trying to figure out a better resolution striking the balance between standardisation and individualization through “Education + AI” system.

Specifically by deploying artificial intelligence technology, Good Future will collect and analyse the business operation data to improve the efficiency in business communication and reduction in human and material cost.
